Motherwood by Radiator Arts

  • St Leonards Church Market London Road Saint Leonards-on-sea, England, TN37 6AS United Kingdom (map)

"MOTHERWOOD' - the wonderful underground world of Mycorrhizal Fungi and its vital place in the forest ecosystem - a fungi themed educational and interactive installation by Radiator Arts in the lower floor of our church venue.

Radiator Arts are an arts collective with 25 years experience delivering community engagement in and around Hastings. Last year they started a project about Fungi inviting artists to make 'shroomy' costumes for Mayday festival, Jack in the Green. To continue this exploration into the mysterious world of fungi, they will be building an educational and interactive installation for all ages to explore throughout the festival.

Using sculpture, light and sound the installation will explore interconnectedness and how nutrients are shared through underground Mycelium networks that feed the roots.

There will be innovative educational corner to discover more about fungi and a space to create something yourself.

The aim is to show how fungi and in the same way, all life, depends on building networks, and sharing. In addition, that our precious environment requires a delicate balance in order to thrive. The Hub or 'Mother' tree in a forest sends upgraded enzymes to allow saplings to fight pathogens attacking the forest system - studies show climate change is having a devastating effect on these ecosystems and yet fungi still find a way to survive. Inspired by the research of Forest Ecologist Dr. Suzanne Simar the installation is designed to educate and inspire.

Mycelium networks are unseen yet vital to the health of trees, almost magical and endlessly fascinating. This is an appealing and perfect metaphor for our climate crisis.
